Catching up with goals: Books!

I know it's a bit late in the year, but somethings are better later rather than never, no? What I am talking about is one of my goals I set last January, the one about reading at least 12 books. After 6 different failed attempts to read a book (mix between fiction, juvenile fiction and nonfiction), I sort of gave up on reading.

Then recently I bought a career type book, and I read it so fast. I was actually putting it down so it would last me, since the book was 'expensive' (-cough-$12.99-cough-) and I didn't have it in my budget to buy another book for a while. But I finished it and it had me thinking and excited about reading again. A-ha! So that was the key. Finding a topic that interested me, and for me, that happens to be career-type books. (By the way, I am in the Human Resources field, which opens up to most Business/Management books).

I've been looking closely at my budget, and was rather sad that this last paycheck I wasn't able to save up to buy a book. Groceries are expensive! What's up with that? And then gas keeps going up... luckily it's slowly creeping down again.

I've looked for the books I'm interested in on all reasonable sources; offline and online (Amazon, B&N, Ebay, just entering the name in Google, Craigslist), and I didn't get much of a price break... I guess that's what I get for looking at business books.

Two things came out from this;
- I would love to get a (very basic!) kindle or other e-reader. The oldest model, B&W reader. Kindle/e-reader editions of the books I would like to get are between 20-60% cheaper on their e-version than the physical books, and friendlier on the environment... not to mention portable. But I don't think I want to spend $60-$120 in a Kindle... just yet.
- Not being able to get a $15 book sucks.

So while I won't be able to catch up to the 12 books I wanted to have read this year, at least I have read something meaningful and that I enjoyed. And I am looking to buy another book this Friday...

Are you doing any last-year's-goal catch-up effort? How's it going?

  1. I need to read more books! My kindle has been dead forever, I need to charge it and get started on my book goal.

  2. Tanner, I'm a lurker. Why don't you look at certain websites? Wall Street Journal or Harvard Business Review come to mind. They have a lot of free articles and would probably interest you (business, management etc.).

  3. Did you check your local library? Our library has a lot of great business and financial books. You might be surprised!

    1. I did check the county library as well as those nearby, since they do the inter-library, but they have very old or unrelated type material. I'd much rather borrow than buy, especially since I don't want the bulk of a lot of books!

  4. I'd definitely check your local library! Sometimes you can even do inter library loans, etc... :)

  5. My financial goals are blown to hell because of the sewer disaster, but I am still plugging along. I also love to read and read a great deal. Have no desire for a Kindle. Guess I don't kow enough about them.

  6. I'll just echo the library suggestion, if possible to get your branch to do intra-library borrowing on your behalf.

    For my goals, I need to kick my workouts back up, get our wills in order (finally!!!), & organize our closets.

  7. Here's what's funny: I used to be a fiction writer, and I don't even read fiction anymore. I've become far, far too serious, I think.

  8. I agree - THE LIBRARY!!! FREE!!! NO BRAINER!!! Don't spend money on books - a TOTAL waste of money unless you'll keep them for future reference. Seriously. Big money pit. Use the library - most are on-line now and you can reserve, renew and look all from your PC!
