Free dentist appointment!

This may come to no surprise for those that have free cleanings/checkups on their insurance policy, but since this is the first year I actually have dental insurance, I was expecting to pay at least $40. Nope, it was free! (as the person who handles the benefits of the company and I know they are covered 100%, holding onto the belief I still had to pay!). It was my first experience with dental insurance, and it was a breeze. Also, I guess it helps there was nothing else to do besides a cleaning, as they gave me a clean bill of dental health.

However... my dental surgeon's office STILL has not contacted me about billing or options for my wisdom teeth removal which is in less than a month! How awful. I've called them twice, but they tell me they are backed up from the snow (the one 2 months ago), and will call me on the hypothetical tomorrow which is yet to come. Very aggravating, ugh!

I haven't figured out where to send out the extra $400 from the bonus, but I think I'll just send them off to my Ally account, where they wont be in danger of everyday expenses. I may just divvy it up between vacation funds, EF, etc.

I did have $500 leftover, but used $100 for personal expenses (go me!) as follows:
-$27 video games (woot, whole Assassin's Creed series up until III game! On sale for 75%!)
-$35 on shoes
-$38 on extra food, gas and things at parents'

I am ready for this next check tomorrow, as my account sits happily at zero. I think a lot of my budget next week will be focused on finding drinkable foods for when I can't eat anything. I've heard of Ensure (it's also a brand known back home, so I trust it), and potatoes. I am not a fan of apple sauce. Anything else I should look into in terms of food?

  1. Ice cream or custard. It's cooling on your mouth. Don't forget broth. My daughter had them done and the first day it was broth, water and she stomached a little bit of milk. Take the pain meds at least the first half of the day. Think of it as the stomach flu and how you slowly get back to eating regular foods.

When the surgeon says no straws he/she means it! It can give you dry sockets from the sucking motion.

    1. Yeah, I've heard of the no-straw rule, which is fine, as I dont use straws. Thanks for the tip on broth, I'll add it to my list.

  2. After I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I would eat cooked carrots with butter and honey on them and sweet potatoes. Both were soft. But I didn't have a lot of pain and I was back to being able to eat pretty quickly. Yogurt, Jello would be good too.

    1. Wow, cooked carrots so early. I've heard to stay away from anything solid, even when it's softened by boiling or steaming. I did have sweet potatoes on the list, for sweet mashed potatoes. A lot more nutrition than white mashed potatoes.

  3. I was lucky, and had dinner that night. Regular dinner. After all 4 were jackhammered out of my mouth. I think the drugs hadn't worn off! But really? Oral surgery has come a long way, and you won't need two weeks worth of pap to slurp down. Maybe a day or two. Oh, and I do love those free dental appointments. Must be why they keep trying to "upsell" me crap I don't need!

    Peace <3

    1. Hahaha. You're lucky! I do hope I have an easy experience. They just keep saying that after 22, it gets worse since the roots dig deeper and closer to the nerve lines... and I'm 27, going on 28. I'd love for this to be a short deal!

  4. I second yogurt, kefir. Pureed soups can be a good option too.

  5. I've had lots of dental work done. My favorite drink is Boost Plus (chocolate). Lots of calories if you're hurting and hungry. In fact, I drink it just cuz frome time to time. I absolutely hate the taste of Ensure, blech! I also like jello, yogurt (no chunks), applesauce, mashed potatoes (Bob Evans microwave instant is good), salty chicken noodle soup, etc.

    1. I've never had Boost, but I'll look for it as well. I don't remember Ensure's flavor, but I do remember drinking it without an issue, so it must not have had a milky flavor (I'm not a fan of milk).

  6. Talk about a fine break! Not everyone stumbles on a deal that cool, that covers for a lot of these health contingencies. A trip to the dentist should be regular, and people tend to not be able to do this for a lot of reasons. Anyways, I hope you're feeling better and be back to eating solids in no time!

    1. Yikes @ avocado! Haha. I'm sure it's good, but it's definitely not something my dad would make me prepare or prepare for me. I think he'd feed me soup before he feeds me liquid avocado.

  8. Have not looked at what other people have stated but I was thinking along the lines of jello, milk shakes, apple sauce, pudding,... Things that do not require chewing or biting. I do not think you want anything to hit the area where the wisdom teeth have been extracted from. I am not envious of you having the wisdom teeth taken out. Everyone I have spoken to says it is a painful process.
    Good luck in your endeavour.

  9. Getting a free dental appointment is always a good experience. You now have a clean bill of health, and you can allot the money you usually spend on dental appointments to something more important. I hope you’ll have the same experience with your dental surgeon’s office as well. Not necessary of being free of charge, but a good, if not tolerable experience with the wisdom tooth removal.
