Have you checked your investments recently?

I overheard some of the managers on the third floor at my office talking about their 401k's and exchanging YTD %'s. I found it curious and a bit funny people actually talk about that, but can't expect any less from a CFO and his second-in-command. One of them said they had a 21% YTD, and the other returned that theirs was close to that but a bit lower.

That's a pretty good percentage... and surprisingly, it's not that far off from mine:

Despite all the things that are going wrong with the world, the gov't and the economy, I can't help but to smirk a little bit that I may be doing something sort of right with my 401k. I only have about $12k on it. My IRA isn't quite as solid, but hey, it's not going backwards... for now. And that's something I can be thankful for.

  1. Of course you are doing something right! You are contributing. That's really the most important thing.

    1. I agree. Even a small amount is better than none.

  2. I have never really paid attention to the %'s. I just look at the total and put the paperwork away. I'll have to check that. Our IRAs are slow moving too, but we put a lot less in them and haven't had them as long.

  3. You'll have a lot more than that with that interest rate! WAY TO GO!! I keep telling my daughter that even $25 a week will grow into something quite substantial over 40 years or more!

  4. yeah mine is at 25% which is kind of ridiculous. I got this paper from our job that said if I put $102 from every paycheck for the next 20 years, I'll have $100,000. I'm putting almost double that from every paycheck so I hope I have a lot more than that! (plus i actually have about 25 years before I retire...)
