Curious about shopping and deals

A site I check rather often is Slickdeals, when looking (or not looking) for things. It can be really bad when I am not supposed to be spending money and a super deal for something I want comes up. No, not promoting, but just sharing. Every so often, I luck out and am able to get something I needed or was looking to buy for extremely cheap (ie, soap, laundry detergent, tooth paste, almonds, books, games), so it's really worth while. Do you have any such sites you follow for deals? I'm curious if there are any other deal-seeking sites anyone follows with any frequency.

I know some have already started their Christmas shopping, and it makes me feel like a slacker, since I will most likely end up doing all the shopping in last minute, if at all. The alternative is always cash when it comes to gift giving during holidays.

On a random note, for those of you that have experience with 'care packages' for college students, can you share with me what exactly goes into those? I was asked to put one together and I have honestly not a clue what goes in. Candies and sweets? Reading material? Toiletries? Call me a child, but all I had envisioned was crayons and coloring books. I know that's what I'd want when buried in mountains of books.

I'll go and enjoy the beautiful weather we've been having this week. 60's in the morning, low 70's in the peak of noon. Absolutely beautiful for August. Hope it's nice wherever you are as well!

  1. Junk food is always good in a care package! And something that relates to the student's fun interests.

  2. My mom always sent me ramen, mac & cheese, hot chocolate, chips, popcorn, chocolate and other junk food. You'd need to make sure they have a microwave though. Occasionally she'd throw in a sudoku or word search puzzle books and small $1 store things she thought I'd like....sometimes toiletries or kleenex, air fresheners, mugs, etc. Whatever the student likes is good to put in there.

  3. I'll have to check out slickdeals. I get emails from groupon but I haven't bought anything in a long time. Their are 2 other sites similar to groupon that I've signed up for. I used to buy from them all the time, but really we don't eat out anymore so unless its to one of our favourite local restaurants I don't bother. Sometimes they offer discounted pump-it-up passes which we do frequently enough to buy some when those are offered.

  4. I look at slickdeals.net sometimes, but like you found I was contemplating buying something just because it was a good deal, so now I only look at it if I'm really intending to purchase something and looking for the best deal. I also look at TotallyTarget.com, since I shop there quite often and I can snap up good deals on the things I buy regularly.

    1. I'll agree with you on that one. It's extremely dangerous, as there are things that are good deals, but not something that I should be buying.

  5. Care packages....definitely food. Usually stuff to eat late night that is quick and easy. When I was in school....it included a roll of quarters for the laundry, but not sure if they do that anymore or if it is all debit! Something snuggly is always good....cute socks, a throw blanket. And maybe something fun....movie gift card, or DVD.

    1. I like the idea of a DVD. Wonder what I should get. They have laundry on premises and though he does drive, not sure he'd need to use parking meters. Great ideas, though. Thanks!
