I think it is awful that throughout life's events, good or bad, happy or sad, money usually plays a part.
Our dog is very sick. Very, very sick. We took her to the vet yesterday, and the doctor gave us a mile long list of things that could be wrong; she's breathing very fast, isnt eating and is barely drinking any liquids. He gave us two meds, and $350 later (I paid for it, I'll sort it out later), we went home with her not feeling one bit later. We gave her the meds, and they actually made her feel worse. I was at work with a bad neck/back (of course, bad things come in group!), and when I returned close to midnight, I was as beat as I was worried. She's still not doing better. She's... "stable", for how she's been. Still breathing too fast. Plan is, if she gets worse, go to the pet ER about 2hrs away, otherwise, we'll try to make it through the night and take her in tomorrow to be hospitalized and stabilized. She cant go on like this much longer.
I am toying with the idea of asking for a day off, or half a day off from work. But we'll see how it plays out. At best, she will get better, but that leaves a journey to remove either a tumor on her left side or what the doctor thinks could be breast cancer. I think that at this point, we will do all we can.
It's been a very sleepless two nights around here (thanks for the untimely hour stolen, DST!), but I'll hope for the best. We've had this dog for close to 10 years. First and only pet that actually made it past 6 months. We certainly don't want to lose her, but no, we wont jeopardize her long-term well being either.
In another hour I'll prepare to go buy the 4 tires for my car. That's another $350. This month is becoming all the bad that was brewing in February and raging out with a vengeance. And seriously, I couldn't understand living without an EF. I think that I will put more emphasis on rebuilding it to 2k, which was previously a very low priority goal. Having money saved for when things go this wrong just takes half the burden off your mind.

Poor doggy, poor EF! My 20 year old cat got sick around Christmas and we thought it was the end, but she recovered (she just had a cold). Now she seems better than ever. She might live another 20 years! It's hard to balance "quality of life" and money spent on pets. Eventually we have to decide if we're prolonging their life for our sake or for theirs. Very hard.

ReplyDeleteOh dear, not another one. A local friend had to put his nearly 15-year-old pup down last week. He and his husband are heartbroken. I'll add you to the "thoughts and prayers" list. I hope things go well.
ReplyDeleteI got lucky yesterday, and the truck maintenance only costs $85. I could have done some of it myself, but my gearhead friends were either out of town, or their garages were already busy. Still, $85 isn't too bad.

ReplyDeleteSo sorry, Tanner - believe me I've been there. We spent a fortune on our diabetic cat, he did live 8 years with the disease & you can't put a price on that. It's such a hard decision, sending big hugs your way.
