Views on shopping

Happy 4th of July to all of my North American friends!

***********

Now let's talk about shopping for a minute.

Every other holiday, I dare venture into certain websites and window-shop for shoes or clothes or other things I may need. 99% of the time, I won't get anything. The last time I added something to my wardrobe was that winter coat back in mid March.

I went to 6PM.com looking for a very specific kind of shoe, and I happen to find a rather nice pair on sale. It's $23 total. A small problem is... the shoes are tan/white. Why is that a problem, you ask? Almost all of my other shoes are black (except a pair of dark wine red and black flats). Why so much black? Because I can match it with virtually anything. White/tan? I'm not so sure. I don't own any sandals either, so that adds to the difficulty.

This lead me to think... if I didn't really had any debt, past or present, or if I didn't care about this whole budgeting thing, I could just buy a pair of black/tan, white/tan, and why not, throw in the navy/tan sandal combo. I'm sure I could use them someday. That took me to another set of shoes with as many as 6 color combinations! While the red would certainly go well with one outfit, I'd need the green for that outfit or yellow for that other one and... before I knew it, I'd end up with 10 pairs of shoes. Am I the only one that's scared by that train of thought?!

I will never really know if I was born a spender or a saver, as I wasn't given much of a choice, but I am glad to be in the road I'm in. Even after I have paid off all my debt, I'd like to be able to save for the bigger purchases and goals without feeling deprived vs the buy now, worry later technique.

Careful shopping: Blessing, evil necessity, or habit you wish to ditch as soon as you can?

  1. In my book tan and white goes with everything as much as black does :-)

  2. I think, white/tan shoes should be fine if you have light pants or other pieces of clothes in lighter colors. I like color (like my Goodwill yellow shoes :) and sometimes I go for unusual combinations! Experiment :) But I do get your point - I much rather save money for something I really want/need than waste it on little things like clothes, purses or shoes.

    1. Need to get more lighter clothes, yeah. And probably something other than black/dark trouser pants.

    1. My co-worker has these beautiful hot pink sandals with peach colored flowers. I love how they look, but I'm not ready for that yet!

  4. I have a hard time purchasing shoes beyond black too. Although I do have a LOT of black shoes. Most of my wardrobe has black as a base though. I have more variety in color for summer though. I have a great pair of tan heeled sandals that look fabulous with brighter colored dresses and several brown sandals too. The Princess has a much larger variety --- fortunately I can raid her shoe wardrobe when I need to!

    1. Yeah, most of my wardrobe bottoms are black or dark. I'm trying to add color back in and lighter tones. Slowly but surely.

  5. The white and tan shoes sound as though they could be a good addition to your wardrobe if you have white, brown, tan, pastel colored clothing. You could even wear them with a white top and black or brown pants/skirt + a small bag that picks up on the tan in the shoes.
